Spying on our world with SPI Club Fall 2017- Using our senses to examine our world more closely
SPI will begin hosting after school science club for elementary students beginning Thursday August 31 at 4:15 on Thursdays, and repeated the following Tuesday at 4:15 . Instructional activities will take between 30-45 minutes, Caregivers are expected to remain at SPI and are encouraged to take part in activities if not responsible for a younger child. Activities are geared for grades 3-5 and their caregivers, but other ages may participate. Science Club activities are included in membership and admission to SPI. Space will be limited so RSVP below is helpful.
Tentative Schedule: Week 1: Aug 31/Sept 5- Touch- How do we explore and build without using our eyes? Mystery bags, boxs, and building with legos... Week 2: Sept 7/12 - See- How big and how small? Use a card game to consider sizes and make your own cards week 3: Sept 14/19- Smell- How small an amount can you smell? Investigate with concentration and dilution Week 4: Sept 21/26- Hear- What is a sound? How do we hear it? Investigate sound with containers and water Week 5: Th Sept 28 only/ Vestibular Sense- Investigate how we balance and how to predict balance Tues Oct 3 - Break for United Way visit (unless we have an alternative staff member to do activities) Week 6: Oct 5/10 Touch- hot and cold- Why do different things feel hot and cold? Investigate chemical reactions that change temperature Week 7: Oct 12/17 Taste- Solve the puzzles to figure out what the taste is. (This is a simulation- no actual tasting will take place). Oct 12/17/19/24 Break for Potato Harvest Holiday (just kidding, but there will be a break because the instructor is going to a conference, though it is possible that alternative activities by a different staff member will occur) Week 8: Nov 2/7 Touch- What is Smooth? What is rough? Investigate different surface interactions Week 9: Nov 9/14 See- Dissect plants/fruit to see more closely what is inside and what is it for? Week 10: Nov 16/21 Smell-What exactly is that smell anyway? Solve puzzles to figure it out. Week 11: Nov 29/Dec 5 Hearing- Investigate relationships with "strings" and sound
