Guidelines for Recruiting New Members
The Board Member Selection Committee will maintain an up-to-date list of potential board candidates, including the particular skills they can bring to the organization.
Prospective Board members will meet with the President and the Executive Director to:
The prospective new member will hear about how the organization orients new members. They will be provided with the names of several Board members whom the prospective new member may contact with any questions.
Any potential conflicts of interest with the candidate, e.g., is he or she on the Board of a competing organization, a vendor of the organization, etc. will be identified.
The President, Executive Director and Chair of the Board Member Selection Committee will present the recommended candidates to the Board for their comments electronically using an electronic survey site like Survey Monkey.
If the Board has no substantial opposition, the prospective new member(s) will be invited to a Board meeting. Current board members will be notified that a potential new member will be attending. Name tags or tents will be used to help the potential new member(s) be acquainted with Board members. The potential new member will be introduced at the beginning of the meeting and will remain through the committee reports. S/he will then be given an opportunity to ask questions, after which s/he will be thanked for coming and then be excused from the meeting.
Shortly after the meeting, the prospective new member will be called by the Chair of the Board Selection Committee to hear if they want to apply to join the Board. If so, they will be instructed to submit their completed board member application. The application will be distributed to the Board for their review and a vote will be taken using an electronic survey site like Survey Monkey.
If there are a majority of assenting votes, the Chair of the Board Selection Committee will notify the new member of their election to the Board and invite them to attend all subsequent Board meetings.
